Persian Yoga (Pahlavani) - The way of Warriors

For complete instructional video series visit: vod.persianyoga.com

Persian Yoga™ (Pahlavani) is the yoga of warriors practiced in secret underground Houses of Power (Zurkhaneh).

Persian Yoga™ is a comprehensive and specific approach for building a strong, functional, flexible and healthy physique which can move with agility and with great fluid grace.

The practice of Persian Yoga™ involves dynamic flexibility postures (Asanas) done in combination with calisthenics, on a Shena, through a series of uninterrupted fluid movements and Asanas that gracefully link to each-other like the pearls on a necklace.

The practice also includes resistance training with Meel and Sang, as a way of developing great strength, mobility, stability, synchronicity and coordination. As well as cardiovascular aerobic exercises and dynamic meditation - Samaa - i.e. meditation through whirling and music.

Persian Yoga™, or Pahlavani, was developed by the Persians over 2,500 years ago as a complete, yet simple, martial arts conditioning system to forge warriors out of ordinary people.

Iran Ancient sport dubbed Bastani report گزارشي از ورزش باستاني ايران

October 21, 2017 (Persian calendar 1396/7/29)

Pahlevāni پهلواني and zoorkhāneh زورخانه اي rituals is the name inscribed by UNESCO for varzesh-e pahlavāni (Persian: آیین پهلوانی و زورخانه‌ای‎‎, heroic sport) or varzesh-e bāstāni (ورزش باستانی; varzeš-e bāstānī, ancient sport), a traditional system of athletics originally used to train Persian warriors in Iran (Persia) and adjacent lands since the Achaemenid Empire.

Outside Iran, zoorkhānehs can be found in Azerbaijan, and they were introduced into Iraq in the mid-19th century, where they seem to have existed until the 1980s. It combines martial arts, calisthenics, strength training and music. Recognized by UNESCO as among the world's longest-running forms of such training, it fuses elements of pre-Islamic Persian culture (particularly Zoroastrianism, Mithrāism and Gnosticism) with the spirituality of Shia Islam and Sufism.

Practiced in a domed structure called the zurkhāneh, training sessions consist mainly of ritual gymnastic movements and climax with the core of combat practice, a form of submission-grappling called koshti pahlavāni.

Pehlwani is a form of wrestling from the South Asia. It was developed in the Mughal Empire by combining native malla-yuddha with influences from Persian varzesh-e bastani. The words pehlwani and kushti derive from the Persian terms pahlavani and koshti respectively. It is likely that the word derives from the Iranian word Pehalavi denoting an Iranian people.

History of the Zurkhaneh and the story of Hossein e Golzar Kermanshahi

Version with English subtitles:

A documentary film in Persian giving a historical overview of the traditional martial art of Iran and then covering the story of Hossein e Golzar Kermanshahi - a legendary Kermanshahi and Iranian Pahlavan.

As well as focusing on general fitness - stamina, flexibility and strength - the sport simulates the use of ancient and medieval weapons such as the bow (kaman), shield (separ) and mace (gors) - conditioning the body for their use. Some say the sport has its roots in the era of the brutal Mongol invasion and occupation whilst others claim a more ancient root based on Iranian Mithraic traditions which were also adopted by the Roman martial classes and known by them as the Mystery of the Persians.

Dedicated to my father, Reza Golzari, (26/09/1945 - 09/07/2015).
