Pehlwani is a form of wrestling from the South Asia. It was developed in the Mughal Empire by combining native malla-yuddha with influences from Persian varzesh-e bastani.[1][2] The words pehlwani and kushti derive from the Persian terms pahlavani and koshti respectively. It is likely that the word derives from the Iranian word Pehalavi denoting an Iranian people.

Persian Yoga (Pahlavani) - The way of Warriors

For complete instructional video series visit:

Persian Yoga™ (Pahlavani) is the yoga of warriors practised in secret underground Temples of Strength (Zurkhaneh).

Persian Yoga™ is a comprehensive and specific approach for building a strong, functional, flexible and healthy physique which can move with agility and with great fluid grace.

The practice of Persian Yoga™ involves dynamic flexibility postures (Asanas) done in combination with callisthenics, on a Shena, through a series of uninterrupted fluid movements and Asanas that gracefully link to each-other like the pearls on a necklace.

The practice also includes resistance training with Meel and Sang, as a way of developing great strength, mobility, stability, synchronicity and coordination. As well as cardiovascular aerobic exercises and dynamic meditation - Samaa - i.e. meditation through whirling and music.

Persian Yoga™, or Pahlavani, was developed by the Persians over 2,500 years ago as a complete, yet simple, martial arts conditioning system to forge warriors out of ordinary people.

Zurkhaneh footage and history from Iranian TV

Scenes from inside an Iranian Zurkhaneh, with historical commentary starting at 6:17. Sorry if it gets a bit shaky at times!

The zurkhaneh is more than just a place dedicated to physical exercise. The zurkhaneh and Varzesh-e Pahlavani have their roots in pre-Islamic Iranian culture. After the Arab conquest, its practice became illegal for a time, and was seen as representing a form of cultural resistance. Over time, however, the pastime adapted to fit in with Islamic culture. In addition, certain moral qualities and values came to be associated with pahlevans; such as courage, selflessness and, above all faith and absolute loyalty to the Prophet (PBUH) and the imams.

Pahlevani پهلواني and Zoorkhaneh زورخانه اي rituals is the name inscribed by UNESCO for varzesh-e pahlavani (Persian: آیین پهلوانی و زورخانه‌ای‎‎, heroic sport) or varzesh-e bastany (ورزش باستانی; varzeš-e bāstānī, ancient sport), a traditional Iranian system of athletics originally used to train warriors.

It combines martial arts, calisthenics, strength training and music. Recognized by UNESCO as among the world's longest-running forms of such training, it fuses elements of pre-Islamic Persian culture (particularly Zoroastrianism, Mithraism and Gnosticism) with the spirituality of Shia Islam and Sufism.

Practiced in a domed structure called the zurkhaneh, training sessions consist mainly of ritual gymnastic movements and climax with the core of combat practice, a form of submission-grappling called koshti pahlevani.
