Football is the people’s game and its wealth, sustainability and support are all underpinned by the mass gathering of spectators. Without the fans, the game cannot exist and, even in this digital age, the value proposition of football is its broad global appeal, making it attractive to investors, benefactors, the media, sponsors and advertisers.

When something disrupts the routine of the world’s most popular sport, the impact goes way beyond supporters being disorientated. The Corona Virus, or Covid-19, has stopped football in its tracks, jeopardising the eco-system that feeds thousands of clubs, players and peripheral businesses.

The Economic and Emotional Impact of Coronavirus

The Economic Impact of Coronavirus and The Emotional Impact of Coronavirus
Now that Coronavirus has shutdown football, what are economic and emotional impact on the club and fans ?

Like it or not, what gives football life is the fans. The fans watching within stadium or watching at home. So what happens when match day revenue dries and there is nothing giant TV companies like Sky sport to televise to fans around globe?

Take for instance, smaller clubs in the English championship whose match day revenue represent 30- 50% of the clubs revenue source will suffer immensely. Let us not forget that most these clubs have a slightly large wage bill. Drying up of match day revenue might affect the long term sustainability of the clubs. The only way out is for owners of these clubs to inject cash into the clubs.

Now, let’s look at the emotional impact.
Football has this inexplicable connection with it fans. The raw emotion it creates in the fans and players is something we all have missed. The joy and excitement every weekend when your favorite club wins or your favorite player scores is gone.
Coronavirus has taken that away. Most football fans are distraught. The weekend feels incomplete. THE bond we share with our home stadium is broken.

Sky Football Benchmark: COVID-19 impacts on player trading activities

In the second episode of the Sky Football Benchmark special addressing the impacts of the coronavirus on the football industry, Luca Marchetti and Andrea Sartori, KPMG's Head of Sports, analyze how COVID-19 affects player trading activities.

Covid-19: economic impact on sports

With the rising cases of the pandemic coronavirus, sporting activities around the world stands cancelled or postponed. The Indian Premier League which is the crown jewel of BCCI if cancelled will cost the cricket board over 4000 crore which is roughly over half a billion dollars. The Euro 2020 football tournament is postponed by a year but the cost if cancelled could have been over $630 million dollars. Formula 1 has cancelled just 2 races of the season but the entire season could cost the management over $300 million or ₹2200 crore. The rest of the NBA season is already called off and that has an impact of over $450 million which is ₹3300 crore. But the biggest blow will come if the 2020 Tokyo Olympics get cancelled. The Japanese Government is all set to lose over $13 billion which is little over ₹9 lakh crore.
