Team News

Pakistan: Imam-ul-Haq's fractured hand makes way for Fakhar Zaman's Test debut at the age of 28. Riaz too has been ruled out on the eve of the game, and Shadab Khan finds himself in the 12 announced for the game.

Australia: Paine has ruled out any changes to his top-six though a shake-up in the batting order could be on the cards. There were fitness concerns regarding pace spearhead Mitchell Starc too, though he is unlikely to be rested.

What they said

Pressure is always different in every match and obviously this is a decider. Being the home team we have to win it and we will enter the field thinking that. We will look to play positive cricket and hopefully the result will go our way. - Azhar Ali

It [series win in Asia] would be a massive thing for any Australian side, and for this one in particular. I touched on it last week that not many people gave us a chance over here, which is a great opportunity for us to prove people wrong and a great thing to keep driving us. - Tim Paine

Live: IND Vs WI 2nd Test | Day 3 | Session 1 | Live Scores & Commentary | 2018 Series

For a third time in ten months, there is an opportunity to take stock of where things stand for the current Indian Test team. The first instance came last December, at the end of the three-Test series against Sri Lanka, just prior to the South African tour.

Through that series, Shikhar Dhawan and Murali Vijay pushed KL Rahul to the third opener’s slot, while Rohit Sharma overtook Ajinkya Rahane with (well, at least in the eyes of the team management) with a couple good knocks. Both these points impacted India’s selection strategy in South Africa, leading to a series’ loss of course.

he second instance came at the end of that one-off Test against Afghanistan in Bengaluru, ahead of the English tour. It didn’t say much, for the team management was never going to make wholesale changes after the South African tour. Dhawan and Vijay stayed put, while Rahul got to bat at number three with Virat Kohli out injured. Rahane though failed to score again.

India went to England with a half-baked top-order, and this again cost them the Test series. Only this time, the result was 4-1 and it does look worse than 2-1 in South Africa. Yes, India competed as Kohli and coach Ravi Shastri tell us again and again. But even they admit – competing isn’t enough anymore. India need to win overseas, urgently, and in that sense, Australia is their final frontier (not in the same terms as Steve Waugh defined it).

Rishabh Pant’s audacious stroke-play complemented Ajinkya Rahane’s patient approach as India reached 308 for four against West Indies on the second day of the second cricket Test on Saturday.

India are now only three runs short of West Indies’ first innings total of 311. The Caribbeans could add only 16 runs in the morning session after Umesh Yadav polished off the tail with career-best figures of 6/88 in 26.4 overs.

While young Pant celebrated his ODI call-up with a second Test half-century, an attractive unbeaten 85 off 120 balls, vice-captain Rahane slogged hard to remain undefeated on 75 off 174 balls.

Together, the duo added 146 runs for the unbroken fifth wicket after India lost in-form skipper Virat Kohli (45) to be reduced to 163 for 4.

This was after young Prithvi Shaw lit up the morning, smashing his way to 70 off 53 balls to provide an initial momentum.

It was a day where India’s Gen-Next enthralled the 18,000 odd crowd with spectacular strokeplay.

Shaw’s cover and off-drive were treat for the eyes. The way he slashed Shannon Gabriel for a six over third man or stood on toes to smash Jason Holder through point was eerily similar to Virender Sehwag’s style of play. The 11 fours and a six were out of the top drawer.

For Pant, it was more about brute power. He hit back-to-back sixes off left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican (1/76), who had till his arrival had decent figures including the wicket of Shaw. There was a steer and sweep and a slog sweep off the senior leg-spin bowler.

When off-spinner Roston Chase dropped short, he cut it ferociously. When leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo flighted the ball, he took a step forward and whacked it through mid-off. He hit 10 fours and two sixes.

Pant’s approach also gave Rahane time to build his innings even though he never looked in control. However going to Australia, India needed its vice-captain to get some runs and to his credit he hung around to do the needful.
