Neiron Ball: Return to The Swamp

For redshirt junior Neiron Ball, it wasn't a normal football injury that kept him out for the 2011 football season. Ball suffered from a rare condition known as an arteriovenous malformation (AVM), which is a tangling of blood vessels. See how Ball fought his way back to return to The Swamp.

Crazy leg muscles required: Introducing swamp football

Save the clean, green pitches for the amateurs because this football league prefers the swamp.

The Greatest Swamp Soccer goals of all time

Blairmore in Scotland played host to the filthiest game of football you are ever likely to see; welcome to the bizarre sport of swamp soccer. The players require real guts, coordination, determination and very very good washing powder.

As with any football game, the pitch is vitally important. It takes around a day to prepare, all the grass is removed, a tractor comes in and churns the ground and then hundreds of gallons of water is added.

The sport is fast becoming a worldwide phenomenon. Originating from the swamps of Finland, they found it to be an excellent means of training for cross country skiing but now swamp soccer tournaments are held across the globe including countries such as Brazil, Holland, China and later this year India.

Surprisingly, no training is required; all that is needed is a sense of fun and a fearless spirit when it comes to mud, mess and mayhem.

Swamp football.

Uczestniczki? A jakże!

Chodzi o to, żeby w nią wskoczyć i się dobrze bawić – podkreśla Maciej Rant, zawodnik i organizator zawodów w piłkę błotną.

To jak, są chętni na wielkie emocje, mnóstwo śmiechu, a przy okazji darmowe spa?

Swamp Football

One day someone somewhere said to themselves What is soccer missing?. Clearly the answer was lots and lots of cold mud. Can't imagine why no-one thought of it earlier.

Swamp Soccer World Cup

The sport is fast becoming a worldwide phenomenon. Originating from the swamps of Finland, they found it to be an excellent means of training for cross country skiing but now swamp soccer tournaments are held across the globe.
Each team consisted of 6 players but teams can draw on an unlimited supply of substitutes throughout the match and each game lasts 24 minutes. The game is on a specially prepared pitch; essentially a wetland area that has been churned and flooded to produce the swamp. Players must continue to move - as the alternative, after all, is to sink into the bog!

The rules of the game are also a little bizarre. Players are prohibited from changing their shoes during the game. Also Corner kicks, penalties, and throw-ins are taken by drop kick.

Swamp soccer: footballers battle it out in mud for World Cup spot

Dozens of footballers have taken part in the Russian Swamp football cup near St. Petersburg to earn a place in the Swamp Soccer World Cup in Finland. The competition, which was officially started in 1998, was inspired by the top cross-country skiers practising their basic level of fitness at the swamp during the summer. Nearly 200 teams, with more than 2,000 players, are expected to compete in the tournament in Hyrynsalmi next month.

Ideal sunny conditions saw the tournament’s 16 teams packing their home and away kits for a dirty weekend north of the border. The championship was open to everyone over the age of 17 years old with teams of all male and mixed.

With names such as “Mud, Sweat & Beers”, “Mudwatch”, “Real Manky” and “Whitby Walruses” the tournament was always going to be fun.
