In this snowboard video we attempt to hike Mt Yotei, which is one of the most iconic mountains in Japan. We attempted this hike last year but failed at reaching the summit with our snowboards. This time around we're hiking the volcano with snow shoes and getting an early start, so hopefully we can reach the summit. If we can manage to summit the mountain we'll have one of the most incredible rides down snowboarding through powder and pillows. If you have any questions about snowboarding in Japan you can leave them in the comments. Thanks for watching!

The mountain winds have blow the snow onto the west facing slopes and leaving the east facing slows icy. We managed to traverse across the icy slopes to the powder filled areas for the best snowboarding of the trip. The mountain here at Corralco, Chile has definitely exceeded our expectation for size and quality of snow for snowboarding. In this video we have 10 tips that will help you improve your carving snowboard turns! A carve is when you ride your snowboards edge around a turn. Carving is an aggressive way to turn with your snowboard with speed and control. Carving is also necessary if you want to do spinning ticks in the park and for riding the half pipe. You can start learning to carve by focusing on one turn at a time. For the toe carve focusing on bending your knees toward the snow. For the heel carve pretending like you're sitting in a chair. As the individual carves improve you can start linking them together on a mellow slope. Always progress at your own pace and be safe while practicing your snowboard carving turns. 5 Common Beginner Snowboard Mistakes & Fixes

In this video we show you 5 common beginner mistakes and how to fix them.

The first is leaning too far on the back foot, making it almost impossible to complete turns. If you going too fast while turning you are probably leaning back. Weight should be equal on the front and back foot, to get more weight on the front foot reach your front hand above the nose of the snowboard. Focus on having your back straight and knees bent.

Second mistake is people turning too quickly, causing the body to be twisted and off balance. Increase the size of your turns, with the upper body moving slow and steady. Keep shoulders lined up with your snowboard and hands over the nose / tail of the snowboard.

The third mistake is falling over on toeside turns from leaning the upper body of the toe edge at the start of the turn. It is also possible to catch your toe edge and really hurt yourself. To fix this keep your weight over your snowboard, to initiate the turn pressure your front foot. Then while keeping your back straight look up to the top of the mountain.

Fourth mistake is too much speed on heelside turns, where the reaction is to lean up the hill and straighten you legs. This will lead to 'chatter', where your heel edge skips or bounces of the snow. To fix this keep knees bent and ready to absorb bumps in the snow. It should look like you are seated with your butt sticking out, arms and shoulders lined up with your board.

The last mistake is falling over while riding off the chairlift. To fix this practice riding with your front foot strapped and back foot sitting just in front of your back binding. Find a gentle slope that is about 30ft (10m) long and flattens out at the end so you will naturally come to a stop even if you don't turn. Spending 20-30 minutes doing practice runs at the start of each day will make you more confident on a chairlift but it will also help your riding in general. Once you feel confident riding straight try turning left and right. Check your snowboard, especially rental boards have a stomp pad to help hold your rear foot in place.

How To Control your Speed / Beginner Snowboarding Tutorial

NOTE‼️
This tutorial is for beginners who don't want to be accelerated while turning.
For intermediate snowboarders, this tutorial is NOT suggesting you stop at the end of each turns, and NOT suggesting you making big wide turns to complete each turns too.
If you wish to control speed on narrower terrains or steeper slopes, you are required to finish turns quick by rotating your body quick.
But the method introducing at the end of this video is still required if you want to manage your speed on those terrains.

When it comes to controlling speed while riding the slopes, even Intermediate snowboarders struggle with this skill.
So don’t feel bad if you have to practice a bit before being comfortable with controlling your speed.
When I ask my students how to control their speed, their typical answer is “skidding” the board.
This is not wrong but we can be more specific.
How?
Ok, let’s think about it together.

Is the reason why you are struggling with controlling speed because of the angle of the slope?
No.
Intermediate riders can control speed on beginner slopes, but they are struggling on steeper slopes.

Is it because your skills aren’t strong enough to control your board?
No.
Because my athletes who are hitting big jumps and rails on daily basis, they still have trouble controlling speed while turning on steeps.

When we slow down and stop while riding, certainly we are skidding our board.
Why does skidding slow you down?
When you skid, there is friction that is created between your board and snow.
But here is the other truth.
We can control speed even while carving.
As you know there is no skidding while in carving turns but controlling speed is certainly possible.

When speed is completely controlled and dominated while riding, what state is it?
Yes, it’s when we stopped and are standing still on the hill.
Because we will stop after slowing down, this state is the final result after controlling speed.

Now let’s try to bridge the gap.

Why are you scared when you need to controll speed?
It’s because you are feeling acceleration.
If you can keep a steady speed even if while sliding straight down the hill, you won’t be scared.
But since your board is pulling down the hill while your board is pointing down even a little, you will be adding more speed thanks to the gravity.

Now let’s think about why you can keep standing still on the hill while stopping.
It’s because your board is not pointing down the hill at all.
In other words, your board is perpendicular to the hill.

Yes, this is the answer for this tutorial!
When your board starts pointing down the hill, you will gain more speed every second.
But if your board is not pointing down and perpendicular to the hill, you won’t be accelerated.
So you won’t be scared.

Here is the summary for this lesson.
If you want to control your speed while riding down the hill, complete each turn as your board gets more perpendicular to the hill.
No matter if you are beginner turning on intermediate slopes or an intermediate rider turning on steeper slopes.
It’s a common skill at any level and it works even while in carving turns, moguls, trees and so on.
