Since 1896, athletics has been on the programme of each edition of the Games of the Olympiad. Its presence on the Games programme has allowed its popularity to increase across the world. This popularity was also strengthened by the creation of the IAAF in 1912. Women's events appeared for the first time at the 1928 Olympic Games in Amsterdam, while the men's programme was standardised as of the 1932 Games in Los Angeles. Although at the beginning women were authorised to participate in only some events, today their programme is almost identical to that of the men.

How to Racewalk

An introductory lesson on the technique used in the Olympic event of racewalking. The coach does not state the rules because this has been found to inhibit skill acquisition. If the technique is learned correctly, the athlete will be within the rules.

Race Walk 101 - How-to and Learning the Basic Techniques for Racewalking - Advice from Coach Carmen

Olympic-style race walking has been an event in the modern games since 1908. The rules are simple:
1. Land with a straight knee that remains straight until the hip has passed over the supporting leg and;
2. Keep at least one leg in contact with the ground at all times.

While judges determine your ability to maintain correct form in official races that range from 1500 meters - 50,000 meters, many walkers simply enjoy this full-body exercise for an awesome low-impact cardio fitness in their neighborhood.

Racewalking - Basics

History was made in more ways than one in the men’s 50km race walk at the IAAF World Athletics Championships Doha 2019 as Saturday (28) merged into Sunday (29).

Yusuke Suzuki became the first Japanese race walker to win a world title, making a bold move in the early stages to build a lead that largely went unchallenged.

In the women's race China’s former world record-holder Liang Rui, winner at the IAAF World Race Walking Team Championships Taicang 2018, added another gold medal to her collection by winning the title in 4:23:26.

Correcting Flaws in Racewalking Technique

How to locate and correct flaws in racewalking technique. This video has advice for both coaches and athletes and is useful at all levels of ability -- beginner, intermediate, or advanced. A system with the mnemonic LAPCraf is taught: Locate the flaw, make the athlete Aware of the flaw, Prescribe a technique change (including remedial mobility and strength exercises if needed), provide verbal and visual Cues to remind the athlete of the correction, and give RApid Feedback as the athlete learns the correction.
Many examples of common flaws are shown at full speed and in slow motion. The video illustrates several feedback methods for use as an athlete revises their technique. These include an inexpensive treadmill mounted video system, elastic bands, cell phones, and elastic tape.
