Football 5-a-side | NHK Animation x Paralympic | Who is Your Hero?

Football 5-a-side animation created by NHK, Japan's national public broadcasting organisation, part of their Para sport series.

Japanese television broadcaster NHK has brought together Para sports and the tradition of anime to promote the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games. Japan’s only public broadcaster invited some of the country’s most famous manga artists and pop singers to take part in a series called “Animation x Paralympic: Who is Your Hero?”

The series was launched with a 5-a-side football episode featuring the Japan national team facing world champions Brazil. The story was directed by Yoichi Takahashi, the creator of the popular manga and animation series Captain Tsubasa. Rock band Okamoto was responsible for the theme song “Turn Up.”

Ukraine reclaim football 7 Paralympic crown

The Europeans defeated Iran 2-1 and reclaimed the Paralympic gold they had won at Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008.

Artem Krasylnykov played the role of the hero as he scored in extra-time to give Ukraine a hard-fought and much-celebrated victory over Iran 2-1 on Friday (16 September).

Ukraine remained undefeated throughout the tournament, winning their five matches, scoring 14 goals and conceding only three.

They have also become the most decorated football 7-a-side team at Paralympic Games, with three golds and two silvers.

There were few chances during a cagey opening 10 minutes at Deodoro, until first Volodymyr Antoniuk and later Vitalii Romanchuk came close to opening the scoring for pre-match favourites Ukraine.

Their pressure finally paid off four minutes before the end of the first half when Antoniuk fired a shot with his left foot to open the scoring and give Ukraine an interval lead.

In the second 30 minutes, Ukraine had countless opportunities to put the game beyond doubt but they could not convert.

They were forced to pay for their wastefulness when Iran equalized as Mehdi Jamali, falling to the ground, pushed the ball past goalkeeper Kostiantyn Symashko.

Extra-time was then needed to determine the Paralympic gold medallist. Ukraine eventually prevailed thanks to a goal scored by Artem Krasylnykov with 15 minutes to go, to claim the coveted gold medal.

Ukraine’s route to gold included a thumping 6-0 victory over Ireland in the group stage of the competition, in which they also beat Brazil and fifth-placed Great Britain convincingly.

“I am unlimitedly happy now. Ukraine showed what we can do, said Ukraine's Taras Dutko.

“I want to thank all the Brazilian people because they are amazing and they made our competition unforgettable.”

Brazilian football legend Cafu was also at the Deodoro stadium as a Paralympic medal presenter.

“I loved all the Paralympic sports. The Paralympics are a life lesson for everyone,” he said.

“Yesterday I watched women’s sitting volleyball – Brazil against USA – and also wheelchair basketball. Today I am here for the 7-a-side football. I was always supporting the swimmers. I watch everything I can on TV or at the field.

“It is an immense honour to be a Paralympic medal presenter, and I think it is good also for athletes to have an unexpected person, maybe a hero for them, giving them their medals.”

Iran’s silver represents their best Games performance, having won bronze at both the Beijing 2008 and London 2012 editions.

Earlier, the home crowd had a reason to celebrate as Brazil took bronze following a 3-1 victory over the Netherlands. Leandro Goncalves do Amaral sealed the win with all three goals for the hosts, while Jeroen Schuitert scored for the Dutch.

Paralympic Sports A-Z: Football 5-a-side

Find out all you need to know about the Paralympic sport of football 5-a-side, including the history, rules, classification and equipment.

For more info go to:

Football 5-a-side, also known as blind football, is an adaptation of football for athletes with a visual impairment. The sport has been governed by the International Blind Sports Federation (IBSA) since 1996 and it is played with modified FIFA rules.

It featured at the Paralympics for the first time at Athens 2004, and has been contested at every Games since. Brazil are the only team to win Paralympic gold and are hunting their fourth successive title at Rio 2016.

World Championships take place every four years in between the Paralympics.

Football 5-a-side teams are made up of four outfield players and one goalkeeper.

Outfield players must be classified as completely blind (B1 category), which means they have very low visual acuity and/or no light perception, whilst the goalkeeper must be sighted or partially sighted (B2 or B3 category).

To ensure fair competition, all outfield players must wear eyeshades. Teams can also have off-field guides to assist them.

The ball makes a noise due to a sound system located inside that helps players orientate themselves. As a result spectators must remain silent whilst watching the game until a goal is scored.

Blind football is played on a rectangular field that measures 40m long and 20m wide. The whole length of the pitch must be covered by kickboards to prevent the ball from going out of play.

The duration of the match is 50 minutes, divided into two 25-minute halves. Each team can request a one-minute time-out in each half. During the last two minutes of both halves, and in case of an extra time, the timekeeper must stop the clock for a free kick, kick-in, goal kick and corner kick.

Eight teams, divided into two groups of four, will compete at Rio 2016. The top two teams in each group will qualify for the semi-finals.

Group A: Brazil, Iran, Morocco and Turkey

Group B: Argentina, China, Mexico and Russia

Paralympic Sports A-Z: Football 7-a-side

Find out all you need to know about the Paralympic sport of football 7-a-side, including the history, rules, classification and equipment.

For more info go to:

This September in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, football 7-a-side will make its ninth appearance in a Paralympics Games.

As the name implies, the sport is similar to its able-bodied version, with some modifications:

•Two teams of seven each are on the field

•The sport is for athletes with cerebral palsy and traumatic brain injury

•There is no offside rule

•Throw-ins may be made with just one hand and roll-ins are also allowed

•Matches consist of two halves of 30 minutes each

•In football 7, the pitch (75m x 55m compared to 120m x 90m, maximum) and goal posts (5m x 2m compared to 7.32m x 2.44m) are smaller

•In the semi-final and final matches, if the scores are level after 60 minutes, two periods of 10 minutes of extra time will be played

•If nobody wins in extra time, the match is decided by a penalty shoot-out

•The objectives are the same: teams try to put the ball in their opponent’s goal, while defending their own.

Athletes are allocated to four sport classes (FT5, FT6, FT7 and FT8) depending on the impact of the athlete’s impairment on his performance.

Each team has to have one FT5 or FT6 player on the field at all times and is not allowed to have more than one FT8 player on the field. A dedicated story on classification in football 7-a-side will be published later in this Sport Week series.

The International Federation of Cerebral Palsy Football (IFCPF) is the global governing body of the sport.
