Off-Road Racing 101: Getting Lapped in Hare Scrambles and Enduros

Let me know your opinion in the comment section below.

It is funny how even at the highest levels of racing, there can be drama around lapped riders (Reed/Dungey @ 2017 St. Louis SuperCross). So why would a regional Hare Scramble series with miles of single track trail be any different, if not worse? Some common courtesy between lappers and lappees can go a long ways. Below are some guidelines that I came up with to help those new to the sport.

#1 - Look forward and listen backwards - It is pretty easy to tell the difference between a racer in your class and somebody that is lapping you just by listening to how they ride the bike. Once they catch you, pull over.

#2 - Pay attention and stay calm - Nobody wants you to crash. Stay calm. People lapping will rev their engine as a way to let you know that they are there. Not because they want to rip your head off. Now, if you don’t pull over, they may want to rip it off.

#3 - Safely move over - Once again, nobody wants you to crash. When you need to move over for a rider, find a safe spot. If you are in a rut, nobody expects you to magically jump out of it.

#4 - Pull over uphill - If you have an uphill or downhill side of the trail you can pull off on, always pull off uphill. It will be much easier to get back on the trail.

#5 - Check for multiple riders - Often there may be two or three racers together. Take a quick look to see if there is more than one racer lapping. I think this situation is the highest likelihood of making contact with a lap rider.

#6 - Consider a split format for your 1st race - A split format race will typically split the A and B riders from the C riders. This reduces the amount of times you will be lapped.

#7 - Let racers from the rows behind pass - I’m not always great about this, and I almost didn’t include it. But, if a racer from a row behind you catches you (especially early in the race), let them by at a convenient time for you. There is not as much urgency to let them by, because your pace should be more evenly matched, but there is no point in keeping that rider behind you because you aren’t racing each other.

#8 - Have fun - Everybody is out there racing because they enjoy the sport. Some people may get a little worked up and say things or do things they don’t intend to say/do. In the end, they want you to have as much fun as they are having so don’t let somebody else's impulsive action affect you.

***ENDUROS*** An Enduro is a time trial and things are a little different than they are for Hare Scrambles. If somebody catches you from a row behind, they area faster than you and they are beating you. Let them by as soon as you safely can regardless of what class they are in. It only adds a few seconds to your time, but if you keep them behind it can really start to add up for the faster rider. What would you want to happen if you were the faster rider?

***When I say Pull Over, I mean to make enough room to let somebody by. With the rare exception, I don't pull over and stop. I'll move over and slow down to give the rider time to pass.

Happy Racing
