Yoshin-ryu Naginata-jutsu - 42nd Japanese Kobudo Demonstration (2019)

Koyama Noriko Sensei and his students demonstrating Yoshin-ryu Naginata-jutsu during the 42nd Nihon Kobudo Embutaikai held at the Nippon Budokan on February 3rd, 2019. The event also commemorated the 40th anniversary of the Nihon Kobudo Kyokai.

Yoshin-ryu was developed in the early Tokugawa period (c. 1660) by Akiyama Shirobei Yoshitoki. Yoshin-ryū Naginata-jutsu stemmed from Yoshin-ryū and specializes in techniques of Naginata, the Japanese halberd. In addition to the Naginata techniques, the school also teaches with the spear (Sojutsu), the short stick (Hanbo) and the chain sickle (Kusarigama).

The editing of these series of videos (9) was painful and took nearly 2 years on my spare time.
It has been filmed by friends and amateurs, from 3 different sources on different types of video camera, with a very very variable quality, from medium to very bad.
We focused the editing on the martial art moves as much as the sources allowed us to. This is more about the gesture than the spectacular effect.
It took a while to create something that holds together.
These very traditional schools (Ryu) are not famous among the non Martial artist affiliated.
The video were supposed to be released, but they never did nor will (...), so here they are, so everyone can appreciate these very specials videos, from these talented martial artists.
I hope you'll appreciate them.
Credits goes to my 3 friends for filming, and myself and another friend for sourcing the videos, editing, and encoding.
The project was completed in 2008 ! (filmed in 2005 !!)

-- PRESENTATION: TENSHIN SHŌDEN KATORI SHINTŌ RYŪ HEIHŌ --
Tenshin Shoden Katori Shinto Ryu is one of the oldest Japanese martial arts. It was founded in the 15th century by Iizasa Choisai Ienao, who was a famous spearman and swordsman of that time. You can still observe in the techniques of the school the characteristic movements due to the fighting conditions of a real battlefield: wearing a 35 kg ancient “Yoroi” armor, moving on potentially uneven ground, the warrior sees his movements slowed and restricted, and he has to strike on particular spots to efficiently go through his opponent’s own protection.

This video, in particular, shows only the Naginatajutsu demonstration among all the other weapons included in the school’s curriculum. Other weapons are shown in separate videos.

-- Official presentation by the Kobudo association --
Founded by Shirobei Yoshitoki who lived around1490-1571, most likely born in Kyushu. From there, the art spread and is now mainly taught in Hiroshima.
This art is mostly practiced and transmitted by women. As one can be attacked in any situation, the most logical trainings gear would be everyday clothing - and that is the reason why they are wearing Kimono. As the founder had a background in medicine, it is also taught how some parts of the clothing can be used as bandages in case of need. Practitioners of this art study over 70 techniques to be prepared for every attack and every situation, which they should face with a state of mind as graceful as a weeping willow, cutting flesh and breaking bones.
Originally, the curriculum of the Yoshinryu included weapons like the Ken, Hanbo, Kusarigama, long and short spear, and techniques without weapons, but is now focusing on the Naginatajutsu.

Japanese Naginata Basic Practice Cuts

Naginata is a long Japanese polearm with a single-edged curved blade attached at the end. It is commonly used by ancient Samurai warriors in battlefield and delivers powerful fearsome cuts.

This video is a series of basic practice drills, known as Suburi.
There are still a number of Samurai sword & weapon schools in Japan, called Koryu, which teaches Kenjutsu and sometimes Naginata-jutsu as well.

In modern day Kendo, the equivalent is Atarashii Naginata, where practitioners wear protective armour (called Bogu) and duel or fence with a bamboo Naginata. The armour is similar to Kendo armour, but with the addition of Sune-ate, which is the armour for the shins. Unlike Kendo where the legs are invalid targets, Atarashii Naginata actually allows you to score a point by attacking your opponent's shin.

Founder: Matsumoto Bizen-no-Kami Kino Masamoto
Current representative: Sonobe Masami (Sōke 18th generation) (園部正美)

-- PRESENTATION: JIKI SHINKAGE RYŪ NAGINATA-JUTSU --
The Jiki Shinkage Ryū Naginata-jutsu origins lie in Matsumoto Bizen no kami Kino Masamoto, about 500 years ago. Matsumoto combined the best elements of the Kurasuma Ryū from the Kansai area with the most efficient sword techniques of the Kashima style in the Kanto area, and created towards the end of the Muromachi Period (1336-1573) his own school of swordsmanship called Kashima Shinden Shinkage Ryū. The 7th head master of the school later changed its name to Jiki Shinkage Ryū; name that is still used nowadays.
Sonobe Hideo, a disciple of the 14th headmaster Satake Kanryūsai (and Satake’s wife Shigeo) was learning at the same time Ryūgo Ryū Naginata-jutsu. She blended some of the Kenjutsu techniques she had learned from the Satakes with her Naginata knowledge and created a set of 25 Kata that would then constitute the Jiki Shinkage Ryū Naginata-jutsu. As the 15th headmaster of the lineage, she trained many students.
The school is characterised by techniques and postures that can be used for both attack and defence, such as Kowaki no Kamae or Kuruma-gaeshi. The main Kuruma-gaeshi techniques are Mizuguruma and Kazaguruma, which draw their inspiration from the flow and the forces of natural phenomenons (water and wind). Those are brilliant and bold moves that can subdue the opponent with the minimum use of power.
The Jiki Shinkage Ryū Naginata-jutsu was influential in the inception of Naginata as a modern Budo.

-- PRESENTATION: TENDŌ RYŪ NAGINATA-JUTSU --
Tendo Ryu is a self-proclaimed Sogo-bujutsu, a comprehensive martial art, which boasts a technical curriculum that supposedly enables its practitioners to face multiple battle situations. It is known mostly nowadays for its Naginata techniques (Japanese glaive), but the practice includes many different weapons, such as the long and short sword, the use of two swords simultaneously, the dagger, the staff (representing a broken Naginata), and the Kusarigama (Japanese sickle linked to a ball by a chain). The school was founded in 1582 by a special character, Saito Denkibo, who trained under the famous Tsukahara Bokuden. It was then transmitted through many generations up to its current master, Ms. Kimura Yasuko, who is also an important figure in the modern “Atarashii” Naginata world.

[Kukamishin Ryu: Naginatajutsu (kihon)]

Naginatajutsu (薙刀術)
The Kukishin Ryū Naginata is 225 cm in overall length. It has a double edged blade that is 21 cm long and is attached to the shaft by wires. It is used to slash, parry, strike, stab and deflect; the blade is also used to hook and arrest. Naginata is a weapon of primary importance in Kukishin Ryū as the Bōjutsu owes its origin to the Naginata. It stands as another signature weapon of Kukishin Ryū and it is perhaps the base of the ryu's creation.
