First 500 mph Run

On October 2, 2018, Team Vesco's Turbinator II with Dave Spangler driving became the first wheel drive car to exceed the 500 mph barrier. Owner, designer and builder, Rick Vesco and his late brother Don began to pursue this goal 17 years ago. Tragically Don died of cancer in 2002 and never saw his dream fulfilled. In 2013 Rick began to upgrade the car with a new turbine engine, new drive train, new traction control, new brakes and new body. It was sweet success when on the first (and only) day of the World Finals event on the famous Bonneville Salt Flats, Dave Spangler powered the car through to a spectacular 503 mph run!

New Land Speed Record Set By Donald Campbell - 403mph (1964) | Sporting History

Campbell was a British speed record breaker who is the only person to have set both world water and land speed records in the same year (1964). On 17 July 1964, Campbell set a new world land speed record of 403.10mph for a four-wheeled car (Class A) at Lake Eyre, Australia. He was however disappointed with the record as his Norris Brothers designed Bluebird-Proteus CN7 had been constructed to reach speeds of 500mph. Campbell went on that year to set another water speed record at 276.33mph. Campbell was killed whilst attempting to set his 8th water speed record in 1967.

The Drayson Racing FIA World Land Speed Record

Drayson Racing is proud to announce that it has set a new World Electric Land Speed Record of 204.185mph.

Former science minister, businessman and racing driver Lord Drayson was behind the wheel of the Drayson B12 69/EV electric Le-Mans PrototypeIn near perfect conditions, the Oxford-based sustainable motorsport company smashed the previous 175mph record, which had stood for nearly forty years, by 29.2mph.

As the new world record holder, Lord Drayson commented:
I'm delighted we've beaten the record tonight and can show the world EVs can be fast and reliable. Drayson Racing is a laboratory for EV technology, testing it to the most extreme level, as we've seen today.

It is not the outright speed of 204.185mph that is most impressive about this record, but the engineering challenge of accelerating a 1000kg electric vehicle on a short runway over a measured mile. However I've got a great team and world-class partners, such as QualcommHalo, Michelin, Multimatic and Cosworth.

This is a true celebration of Britain's leading position within the burgeoning electric vehicle industry and I'm delighted to be at the forefront of this electric revolution. We hope to set more records tomorrow.

Drayson Racing is a research and development business, pioneering the development of sustainable technologies in the challenging environment of motorsport. With the electric land speed record it intends to showcase what is possible with an electric drivetrain and underscore Britain's leadership position in the EV industry.

VESTAS Sailrocket 2. "The magic mile" world record*...

Two days after finally smashing the Outright world speed sailing record, the Vestas Sailrocket 2 team decide to tackle the 'Nautical Mile' world record which was held by the mighty 'Hydroptere'. It was always going to be an interesting challenge for the VSR2 team as the speed course that they sail on in Walvis Bay, Namibia is defined by a beach which is exactly 1.04 miles long. This requires them to launch the boat out in more exposed waters and try and get up to as high a speed as they dare in rough water before they hit the start of the mile. At the end of the course they also fire out into rough water and have to bring the boat to a stop. It's hard on the boat. The beach is not straight but has a slight curve in it . The mile is measured by TRIMBLE GPS equipment in a straight line so pilot Paul Larsen needs to balance between sailing in close to the beach for the flat water... and sailing the straightest and hence shortest distance between A and B. In this run, with winds that averaged just under 25 knots, The team smashed not only the nautical mile record* by over 5 knots averaging over 55.3 knots... but also raised their own 'Outright speed' record* to 59.38 knots over 500 meters hitting a peak speed of 64.78 knots (74.55 mph, 120 kph). For Larsen it was the perfect payback for 10 years chasing 'the perfect reach'. Speed sailing had paid him back in full and a dream was realised.
VSR2 performed exactly as predicted by the Sailrocket design team of Malcolm Barnsley and Chris Hornzee Jones at AEROTROPE. The spec for the boat was to be able to hit 65 knots in 26 knots of wind in order to average around 60 knots.
