Let's Look At Portuguese Stickfighting - Jogo Do Pau

We were sent some clips featuring some amazing Portuguese martial arts by viewer and martial artist Dave Tenedorio. The art is called Jogo Do Pau and it is practiced in Portugal and Galicia. In this exploration, let's look at and critique how these martial artists learn to fight with a staff. This is super interesting and super awesome! Hope you guys contribute your thoughts too. I always learn so much from you guys!

Jogo do Pau flow drill, static distance

This is part of our flow drills where we aim to keep in constant motion in order to become more dynamic in our attacks and parries. This we also practice with dussack, quarterstaff and longsword.

This is not sparring, and should not be confused with it.It is an exercise from middle range without footwork, meant to train specific areas. For a more sparring oriented clip look here:

Also, for reading more about these types of exercises, look here:

Staff Fighters In the Torneio de Jogo do Pau de Tomar

The Staff Fighters where in the City of Tomar, for there first Jogo do Pau Tournament, along side with the Esgrima Lusitana Cascais and Thomar Honoris Associations.
It was a great time, in a beautiful city, but we stayed in doors most of the time... STAFF FIGHTING!!!
In all honesty, we were too busy fighting to document it, but we still managed to collect some films, so we hope you enjoy some of the best hits.
If you like this movie, please let us know, with a thumbs up or a comment if you have any ideas.
