Ikkaku ryu juttejutsu

Hiroi Tsunenji (left) and Yoneno Kotaro (right with sword) of Shinto Muso-ryu demonstrating the sub-art Ikkaku-ryu juttejutsu. Uken kata of the Omote-series.

Shinto Muso-ryu was founded roughly 400 years ago by Muso Gonnosuke. History states that Gonnosuke was defeated in a duel with Miyamoto Musashi. After his defeat he had an insight and created techniques for use with the quarterstaff (128 cm. staff called Jo). Legend states he returned and defeated Musashi in a rematch.

Besides the main Jodo-techniques there are also five sub-arts within the Shinto Muso-ryu system. Ikkaku-ryu, Ittatsu-ryu, Shinto-ryu, Isshin-ryu (kusarigama) and Uchida-ryu.

十手 * 兜割 * 鉄扇 * 扇子 Jutte - Kabutowari - Tessen - Sensu [Promo] 2017

Soon.... Juppo Sessho Hibun No Kami be connected....!!!!!!!

- jutte (十手), literally meaning “ten-hand” (i.e., the weapon with the power of ten hands), is a specialized weapon. Juttejutsu was evolved mainly for the law enforcement officers of the Edo period to enable non-lethal disarmament and apprehension of criminals who were usually carrying a sword. Besides the use of striking an assailant on the head, wrists, hands and arms like that of a baton, the jitte can also be used for blocking, deflecting and grappling a sword in the hands of a skilled user.

- Kabutowari (兜割; Literally meaning Helmet Splitter or Helmet Breaker) This was used much in the same way as a jutte but was much heavier and could be used to literally crush and break the helmet and armor of the enemy.

- Tessenjutsu (鉄扇術?, lit. iron fan technique) is the martial art of the Japanese war fan (tessen). The use of the war fan in combat is mentioned in early Japanese legends. For example, Yoshitsune, a hero of Japanese legend, is said to have defeated an opponent named Benkei by parrying the blows of his opponent's spear with an iron fan. This use of the iron fan was taught him by a mythological creature, a tengu, who had also instructed him in the art of swordsmanship.

- Sensu 扇子The folding fan was invented in Japan and was in use by the Japanese aristocracy as early as the 6th Century. The folding fan was made of bamboo, or wood and Japanese paper (washi) or silk, which required skilled craftsmen to produce. Although it is highly unlikely that the folding fan was ever adopted for or intended to serve as a weapon, being an “innocent” item that could be carried to any event or meeting, even when swords were forbidden, made it a potentially excellent weapon for self-defence.

Kiraku Ryu Jujutsu - Mizushina Toshimi - 2019 Asakusa Kobudo Taikai

School: Kiraku Ryū Jūjutsu
Event: 2019 Asakusa Kobudō Taikai
Date: 20/04/2019
Venue: Taitō Riverside Sports Center
Founder: Toda Echigo-no-Kami
Current representative: Mizushina Toshimi (Sōke 19th generation)

-- PRESENTATION: KIRAKU RYŪ JŪJUTSU --
The school was founded by Toda Echigo-no-Kami. He served the Maeda Clan for many years and fought for Maeda Toshiie during the siege of Suemori in the Noto province. He was then awarded a stipend of 13,670 Koku for his military feats and became later known as “Master Echigo”, founder of the Toda Ryū.
It was the 10th headmaster of the school, Hirukawa Kikuemon Okiyoshi, who decided to change the name “Toda Ryū” into “Kiraku Ryū”.
A few generations later, the 14th headmaster Saitō Buhachirō Arihiro became the Jūjutsu instructor of Lord Sakai of Isezaki and subsequently attracted thousands of disciples. From then the school flourished in Isezaki’s vicinity until the late Meiji Era.
The secret of the Kiraku Ryū is to “dominate the opponent's mind with your own”. Having been developed from actual battle techniques from the Warring States era, defeating the enemy is of the utmost importance and that’s why the school teaches numerous techniques. With Jūjutsu at its core, it also transmits over 200 techniques among which you can find for instance the Bō (staff), the Tachi (sword), the Tessen (iron fan), the Jutte (truncheon), the Naginata (glaive), the Chigiriki (a kind of flail) and the Kusarigama (chain and sickle).
After many years of activity, the Kiraku Ryu Jūjutsu Renshikan Mizushina Dojo has been recognized as an important Intangible Folk Cultural Heritage of Isezaki City on February 26, 2015 (Heisei 27).
The current 19th Headmaster of the school is Mizushina Toshimi.
