Coronavirus Hits the Sports World - Doctor's COVID-19 Review For Athletes and Sports Fans

Coronavirus, or COVID-19, has finally hit the sports world, causing FIFA football matches to be cancelled, spectators kept from the Tokyo Marathon, NBA players are refusing to sign autographs, and there's a real risk that the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo could be cancelled. We should be prepared for further impact in the sports world, and so this is my easy to understand guide to the key things to know about Coronavirus and some key points for athletes and sports fans to consider.

**Note: technically COVID-19 is the name of the disease caused by the virus, and the virus has been officially renamed to SARS-CoV-2, or SARS-2

Football is the people’s game and its wealth, sustainability and support are all underpinned by the mass gathering of spectators. Without the fans, the game cannot exist and, even in this digital age, the value proposition of football is its broad global appeal, making it attractive to investors, benefactors, the media, sponsors and advertisers.

When something disrupts the routine of the world’s most popular sport, the impact goes way beyond supporters being disorientated. The Corona Virus, or Covid-19, has stopped football in its tracks, jeopardising the eco-system that feeds thousands of clubs, players and peripheral businesses.

Covid-19: economic impact on sports

With the rising cases of the pandemic coronavirus, sporting activities around the world stands cancelled or postponed. The Indian Premier League which is the crown jewel of BCCI if cancelled will cost the cricket board over 4000 crore which is roughly over half a billion dollars. The Euro 2020 football tournament is postponed by a year but the cost if cancelled could have been over $630 million dollars. Formula 1 has cancelled just 2 races of the season but the entire season could cost the management over $300 million or ₹2200 crore. The rest of the NBA season is already called off and that has an impact of over $450 million which is ₹3300 crore. But the biggest blow will come if the 2020 Tokyo Olympics get cancelled. The Japanese Government is all set to lose over $13 billion which is little over ₹9 lakh crore.

COVID-19 Shakes the Sports World Documentary

The COVID-19 pandemic brought the sports world to an unexpected grinding halt. As a former collegiate athlete, I couldn't help but wonder how current college and professional athletes are dealing with such a dramatic end to their seasons and in some cases to their careers. I decided to reach out to three current and former University of Oklahoma athletes hoping to create a successful documentary that shares each of their unique experiences during this difficult time. This documentary will showcase how COVID-19 not only affected the sports world, but also how it affects all athletes in differing ways depending upon what sport they play and where they might be in their career.

With the pandemic causing our nation to take measures such as social distancing and self-quarantining, this documentary will be for the majority filmed through Zoom and personal B-Roll shots filmed by each of the interviewees. I believe that even though filming the documentary this way is not standard, it will add to the films artistic direction by showing how we are having to communicate for the time being. We are living history right now and when people watch this documentary in the future, they will get a sense of the measures we had to take in order to keep living our lives.

My goal for this documentary is to inspire others, not just athletes, to not let this current pause on life completely stop them from where they plan on going. Although this pandemic has altered the lives of many so abruptly, we must push forward with hope.
