Captain's Log with Captain Mark Gray is a Boating Safety TV series that aired nationwide - weekly - primetime on TLC (The Learning Channel) from 1987 to 1990.

Shooting Day # 3 - Show # 2 = (#12) of 11, 12, 13, 14 & 15)

* Setting up / producing 5 shows a week and then shooting and hosting the FIVE - 1/2 hr live shows - in 3 hrs on location every Saturday - (3 cameras, live edit to tape remote studios) - reduced my cost by 80% but made me one very tired guy :-)

All 20 shows only took 1 month to set up the production (pre-sell the sponsors / advertisers and produce all of their ads - book the production crew and equipment as well as the pilot run airtime [primetime and major channels 2-13, from Santa Barbara CA down to LA and out to Bakersfield] and another 4 Saturdays (one month) to shoot the series but another 3 years to produce ie: Develop and maintain advertisers and work with TLC and the boating industry etc...).

Show #1 - Dismasting At Sea - (TLC 1987 - 1990)

1st Segment: Shipwrecks, Smugglers, and Maritime Mysteries - 2nd What Is A LEGAL Log Book - 3rd Dismasting At Sea. This show has the Swimwear Segment and the Old Open that did not air on TLC. These original shows only aired on the Pilot Runs in CA in 1987 (with the old opens and swimwear segments included).

This is Show #1 of five 1/2 hr shows that I shot that day in 3 hrs and it was also the first TV show I ever created, produced and hosted in my life. I was exhausted before shooting and had problems like a marina manager threatening to shut me down etc. In the end all went well and the show/s went on. This show is dedicated In Memory Of my first guest and a really great guy - Author, Eugene D. Wheeler 1924 - 2013 Ventura, California.

The following is the gobbly goop for the insiders that basically says, I worked very hard and even dumped my own trash as a 1 man show vs being a mega production. All with zero training and zero money except for having watched TV, once or twice and learning that the ads pay all of the bills (if you are lucky). Things were very expensive before the Internet. Running up and paying $3,000 a month for my phone bill alone was just a small part of it. Here is the inside for my peers to enjoy:

Hard work, lots of luck and God makes the world go around and this project come to pass. Thanks to everyone willing to be on the show and at TLC etc! They are the show!
