Deep-water soloing, also known as psicobloc, is rock climbing carried out directly over water and without safety harnesses, meaning just the slightest slip sends the climber tumbling into the sea below. Check out all the action from the full event clip!

Mallorca - Deep Water Solo

#DWS #Climbing #Mallorca

Deep Water Solo (DWS) means climbing over the water without any ropes. If you fall in, ...well, you get wet (duh). Mallorca, a beautiful island in the Mediterranean Sea, is a unique spot for this sport, as its high limestone cliffs over deep water provide the perfect setting.
In September 2019, five of us traveled to Mallorca in order to see what this sport is all about.
In short, we were absolutely blown away on so many levels. Mallorca has sometimes a bad reputation as a party island, but, though true in some places, this doesn't do the island justice at all. We travelled through beautiful landscapes, enjoyed mind blowing beaches, hidden away in small bays, ate great food and, most of all, discovered wonderful spots to climb in the rocks above the sea.

In this movie, we'd like to show you the amazing places we visited during our stay and introduce you to the locations that we think are suitable for intermediate climbers who come to Mallorca for the first time (as we did ourselves) and don't know what to expect.

Enjoy!

What happens when water turns to rock and your once safe landing is transformed into a no fall zone? In the world of deep water soloing, that's when you're entering the territory of the S3's. For deep water soloists, climbs aren't only graded for their difficulty but for their level of danger too. The S grade gives the climber an idea of the route's height, landing and the possibility of injury from a fall. Starting way down at S0 with short climbs above clear, deep water, the grades max out at S3, where things start to get truly serious. In this video, Neil Gresham, renowned deep water soloist and all-round great climber sets out to climb one of Britain's most intimidating S3's; 'The Abyss.' The route's modest grade of 7b may make it seem like an easy prospect, but one look at the line confirms that it is anything but. Steep, imposing and very long, 'The Abyss' was established by Britain's preeminent free-soloist, Julian Lines, perhaps the only man capable of looking at the route's landing and still considering the line a goer.

Ever Thought about taking a 50-foot fall off a sea cliff into the chilly North Atlantic? Time for some British deep water soloing. When we think of deep water soloing, it usually involves warm-water paradises like Mallorca, Thailand, and Vietnam. However, contrary to popular opinion, there is far more to British climbing than scary ledge-shuffling on the gritstone escarpments of the Peak District. British climbing has a long, colorful history of sea-cliff climbing. The Pembroke, Swanage and the Devonshire coasts have long played host to some of the country's finest traditional lines but in recent years, the development of the country's sea cliffs has been revolutionized by the burgeoning deep water solo scene. The sea is no longer the enemy, to be avoided with rope and rack, but the safety net, cushioning failures and encouraging a try-hard attitude. This video is a tribute to that spirit: one of freedom and exploration that is seeing a new generation of pioneers drawing lines on the British coast.

Deep Water Soloing: Climbing with the Ocean as a Safety Net

► Click for climbers performing gravity defying 'dynos':
To most people, climbing simply looks risky – and with the wrong gear in the wrong spot, it certainly is. Ropes, harnesses, carabiners, bolts and more are use to protect climbers from taking a big fall off the wall. But what if you wanted to ditch all that stuff and just climb free? Well, you could do like famous free-soloist Alex Honnold, who many simply consider insane. Or you could ditch that idea, and go for a deep water solo, or, as the Spanish call it, Psicobloc – the practice of free climbing above water deep enough to fall in safely.
