Tenshinryu Hyouho Battojutsu①

Tenshinryu Hyouho is a school of traditional Japanese Martial Arts which comprises various types of classical forms. It also includes battojutsu or the art of drawing the sword. These sword-drawing techniques are so quick that a swordsman has the ability to land a strike first even when being attacked from behind or being chased. Ayako Kisa visits the Tenshinryu Hyouho training center to see how these 400-year-old techniques, which were once used to guard the Shogun, are being passed down.

Shojitsu Kenrikata Ichi Ryu Kacchu Battojutsu - 40th All Japan Kobudo Demonstration - 2017

SUBSCRIBE :

Shojitsu Kenrikata Ichi Ryu Kacchu Battojutsu demonstration by Kanzaki Masaru sensei and other students by during the 2017 40th all Japan Aikido Kobudo Demonstration at the Nippon Budokan.

-- Official presentation by the Kobudo association --
Imaeda Sanaka Fujiwara Ryotai, born in 1647, is mentioned as the founder of this art. From his father he learned the Imaedaryu Kenjutsu, and traveled with his uncle to Edo (former Tokyo and seat of the Tokugawa Shogunate), accomplishing his studies of the sword under his uncle's guidance. Imaeda also learned Yagyuryu, Kittoryu, Kashiwararyu and founded a Bujutsu Dojo in Edo.
The characteristics of his school are deeply rooted in the family's Imaedaryu Kenjutsu, especially the techniques of drawing the sword.
The maneuver to shake off the blood of the sword and wipe it clean with two fingers before returning it to its scabbard, as well as the way of kneeling are also special to this art.

School: Kanemaki Ryu Battojutsu (鐘捲流抜刀術)
Event: 43rd All Japan Kobudo Demonstration
Date: 02/02/2020
Venue: Tokyo Budōkan, Tokyo
Current representative: Narahara Masashi (12th generation) (楢原正士)

-- PRESENTATION: KANEMAKI RYU BATTOJUTSU --
The Kanemaki Ryū Battōjutsu was founded by Kanemaki Jizai at the end of the 16th century, after he studied the Chūjō Ryū sword techniques. The documents of the Kanemaki Ryū show that the famous Itō Ittōsai is listed as Kanemaki’s successor. Sword techniques with the short and long swords were transmitted in the region of Gunma and Niigata.

The Kanemaki Ryu still exists, but today’s teachings only evolve around the Battōjutsu, as presented in this video. Teachings based on partner work like the Kumitachi were lost during WWll, when the successors of the school were killed before transmitting the curriculum.

Sekiguchi Ryu Iai Battojutsu - 40th All Japan Kobudo Demonstration - 2017

SUBSCRIBE :

Sekiguchi Ryu Iai Battojutsu demonstration by Komehara Kameo Soke and his students during the 2017 40th all Japan Aikido Kobudo Demonstration at the Nippon Budokan.

-- Official presentation by the Kobudo association --
The Sekiguchiryu was founded by Sekiguchi Ujinari (1636-1716) and originates in the Sekiguchiryu Bujutsu.
Special in this sword art is a difficult technique called Tobi-Chigai-Kiri that describes the cutting while jumping up and reversing the position of the feet at the same time. This technique does not only exist with the Tachi (long sword) but also with Kotachi (short sword). There are also techniques in which the sword is handled with only one hand like in the Niten Ichiryu. And last but not leas, the adversary has to be overwhelmed with a loud, high and long yell.

Katana Samurai Sword - Shohatto from Enshin Itto Ryu Battojutsu - Bujinkan Ninjutsu Black Belt

Katana Samurai Sword - Shohatto form from Enshin Itto Ryu Battojutsu - Bujinkan Ninjutsu Black Belt Demonstration. The basic form of Shohatto, Standing, in four directions. This technique uses the Katana sword and the form is from Enshin Itto Ryu Battojutsu.

Shohatto is a basic form, demonstrated here in 4 directions while standing. The four sections of the form are 1) nuki uchi, draw 2) kiri oroshi, cut 3) chiburi, flick/clean 4) noto, stow

The Basics of Ninja Training black belt course is no longer available. For information about Mark Roemke, please contact his dojo

Enshin Itto Ryu Battojutsu is the art of drawing and cutting with the Japanese Samurai Sword. This is a family art taught by Soke Machida Kenshinsai of Nodashi Japan. The mother of Machida Kenshisai Soke is from a prestigious samurai clan in Aizu area of Tokugawa era. Machida Soke was born in 1932, and was taught martial arts since he was 3 years old from his father and grandfather. Machida Soke believes that practicing martial arts is completely different from doing sports. The true martial art is to attain the level of skills that could instantly kill the opponent. in Enbukan philosophy you must not be afraid of anything.

About formal training:
There are many variations of this form in different schools including seated positions, other terminology etc. A great deal of detail about perfection of form has been omitted in this basic demonstration, it is an introductory example only. Many centuries of tradition about other katana and sword-based study are intentionally omitted here and you should be aware that many sword-based schools of study have different practices and terms as well. If you have questions about these specific techniques or where to learn them you should investigate the Machida family and Enshin Itto Ryu Battojutsu. This is not Bujinkan specific instruction but many Bujinkan and Ninjutsu masters incorporate this learning into their formal training and survival skill arsenal.

About swords and other bladed weapons in Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu:
Read the above information about formal techniques. Then read Hatsumi Soke's teachings in his books. Some schools related to katana or iaido study are very technical and precise, However, in Bujinkan, all objects are just tools for opportunties to survive an enemy attack. PERIOD. The samurai had their traditions for using many types of blades - and those artforms are useful for modern training and intellectual pursuit. But in the Bujinkan you should be prepared to use any object in any manner that is effective for survival against attacks. All weapons videos on this channel, including the Katana Samurai sword forms, should be viewed with the survivalist perspective if you are a Bujinkan student.
