What Is The Best Age For Triathlon? | The GTN Show Ep. 37

On this week's GTN Show, we chat Mark turning 30!!! This sparked the discussion about the best age to do triathlon, and at what age your performance will drop. We also have lots of race results and triathlon news this week, including the announcement of the new Zwift Triathlon Team!

The GTN Show is for every triathlete, swimmer, cyclist and runner!

Mark was put in the 30-34 category at XTERRA Malta the other week. It was a bit of a shock but got us thinking about the age of athletes in triathlon. We've often heard 30 regarded as the prime age for triathletes, but there have been some incredible professional athletes racing into their 40's such as Tim Don and Craig Alexander. So what is the optimum age to compete in triathlon?

In episode 37 of the GTN Show we also discuss:
- The Zwift Triathlon Academy
- The water quality for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics
- Challenge Tri Slam
- Super League Triathlon Announcements
- XTERRA, Challenge and Ironman race news
- Hydrations sensors, Quarq tyre pressure reader and the Aeropod on Kickstarter

As well as the latest in all things triathlon, we have our usual segments such as the #GTNPainCave, #GTNTRIBE and CAPtion competition.

How To Train For Your First Triathlon | An Introduction To Triathlon Training

GTN are going to be bringing you a series of videos to help you train and prepare for your first triathlon! You’ve entered your first event...but where do you start?

Subscribe to GTN:
Check out the GTN Shop:

As a minimum, we would recommend 12 weeks to realistically prepare for, and complete a triathlon. That’s not to say that it’s not possible in less time, but to turn up feeling relaxed and confident, then this length of preparation should do the trick. So, we’ll be gearing our series of videos to a 10-12 week training time.

As triathletes, you have 3 sports to juggle and this can be quite challenging. If you work out six times in a week, you might swim twice, bike twice, and run twice, but your longest bike ride might be one hour, whereas your swims might last 30 minutes each and your runs, 40 minutes.

If you have a background in swimming, you can probably get away with doing a little less on your stronger discipline, and spend a little more time on your weaker disciplines. At least to bring them up to a point that you’re more comfortable with them. You can of course play to your strengths, but that’s for a later date, for now we want to make sure you complete your first triathlon comfortably.

Whilst training for your first triathlon, it’s mostly about completion. So following a gradual and sensible plan that keeps you consistent with your training is the key.

We like to explain it as if you’re building the foundations. You can’t move on without those foundations, otherwise it will all fall apart. So, whilst it’s tempting, the harder and faster stuff could be more detrimental if you do it before you’re ready to.

We’ve got three sports. That means three different sports to buy kit for. But, unless you really want to, there is no need to take out a mortgage for a new bike and other kit for your first triathlon. We’re sure you’ll love the sport, but until you’ve done an event it’s worth holding off on spending a load.

Triathlon Training Explained | Swim Drafting Position - Hips Vs. Feet

We’re going to be investigating one of the most important parts of the triathlon swim, drafting. Swimming behind someone will save you energy and allow you to swim faster, but where is the best position to draft?

This week we’re at Team Bath and we’re going to be investigating one of the most important parts of the triathlon swim, drafting. More specifically, it’s the effect of drafting we’re interested in. Now, we all know that by drafting another swimmer we can save energy, or go faster.

We can draft on the feet or on the hips when swimming - but which is faster?

This week we put it to the test over a 50m swim, a 200m swim and then speak to Professor Stephen R Turnock from the University of Southampton.

Let us know your predictions for which drafting position is faster in the comments below 👇

Mark Races XTERRA Malta | GTN Off-Road Triathlon Vlog

It's just gone half six on the morning of the race, I'm super excited, but I'm obviously quite nervous too. It's nervous in a different way from normal because I'm usually gunning it for the podium or to beat the other athletes. But, this is really different. This is almost like I'm scared what I'm about to do to myself because I'm not very good at holding back. I'm not massively prepared and fit, so I'm actually slightly nervous I'm about to blow up on this...

I've just arrived in Malta ahead of my first ever XTERRA triathlon, an off-road triathlon, and actually my first race since retiring from being a professional triathlete. I've kind of enjoyed myself since retiring so this is off the back of pretty little training actually. And apparently, I've thrown myself into the deep end because this is one of the toughest XTERRA courses on the circuit. We're out here for week of filming ahead of the race, so probably not the most ideal prep, but I'm really excited to race my first ever XTERRA. Everyone tells me how fun they are so I can't wait to get stuck in. We are good to go - XTERRA Malta, here I come... 🏆

There’s a reason why Triathlon is one of the fastest-growing sports in the world and also has a reputation for being one of the most exciting. Not many other sports offer such variety – athletes splash through a hard-fought swim before they climb onto their bicycles, and then finish the race on their feet as they run to the finish line. Thanks to Baku’s proximity to the Caspian Sea, as well as the iconic buildings and amazing sights the city has to offer, the Triathlon competition at the inaugural European Games promises to be spectacular.

The women’s Triathlon event will take place on 13 June, and the men’s event will take place the following day on 14 June 2015. Each event will feature 65 competitors swimming, cycling and running against each other with one common goal – to be the first competitor to cross the finish line in their medal event. The winner of each event will also gain their NOC direct qualification for the Triathlon event at the Rio 2016 Summer Olympic Games.
