How To Train For Your First Triathlon | An Introduction To Triathlon Training

GTN are going to be bringing you a series of videos to help you train and prepare for your first triathlon! You’ve entered your first event...but where do you start?

As a minimum, we would recommend 12 weeks to realistically prepare for, and complete a triathlon. That’s not to say that it’s not possible in less time, but to turn up feeling relaxed and confident, then this length of preparation should do the trick. So, we’ll be gearing our series of videos to a 10-12 week training time.

As triathletes, you have 3 sports to juggle and this can be quite challenging. If you work out six times in a week, you might swim twice, bike twice, and run twice, but your longest bike ride might be one hour, whereas your swims might last 30 minutes each and your runs, 40 minutes.

If you have a background in swimming, you can probably get away with doing a little less on your stronger discipline, and spend a little more time on your weaker disciplines. At least to bring them up to a point that you’re more comfortable with them. You can of course play to your strengths, but that’s for a later date, for now we want to make sure you complete your first triathlon comfortably.

Whilst training for your first triathlon, it’s mostly about completion. So following a gradual and sensible plan that keeps you consistent with your training is the key.

We like to explain it as if you’re building the foundations. You can’t move on without those foundations, otherwise it will all fall apart. So, whilst it’s tempting, the harder and faster stuff could be more detrimental if you do it before you’re ready to.

We’ve got three sports. That means three different sports to buy kit for. But, unless you really want to, there is no need to take out a mortgage for a new bike and other kit for your first triathlon. We’re sure you’ll love the sport, but until you’ve done an event it’s worth holding off on spending a load.

Baku 2015 is the 1st European Games. Find out more on our official website ( follow us on Twitter ( and Facebook (

There’s a reason why Triathlon is one of the fastest-growing sports in the world and also has a reputation for being one of the most exciting. Not many other sports offer such variety – athletes splash through a hard-fought swim before they climb onto their bicycles, and then finish the race on their feet as they run to the finish line. Thanks to Baku’s proximity to the Caspian Sea, as well as the iconic buildings and amazing sights the city has to offer, the Triathlon competition at the inaugural European Games promises to be spectacular.

The women’s Triathlon event will take place on 13 June, and the men’s event will take place the following day on 14 June 2015. Each event will feature 65 competitors swimming, cycling and running against each other with one common goal – to be the first competitor to cross the finish line in their medal event. The winner of each event will also gain their NOC direct qualification for the Triathlon event at the Rio 2016 Summer Olympic Games.

How To Get Your Bike Ready For Your Next Triathlon - With Pro Triathlon Team Mechanic

When it comes to race day, it's not just about getting yourself ready. You also need to get your bike ready, so we're going be running through a few of the main points to get your bike race ready, and we're going be getting help from Tom. Tom is from BMC Vifit Sports' professional triathlon team, and he is their bike mechanic. He's going be running through the why's and I'm gonna be running through the how's.

Before we get started, are there any dos and don'ts when you're getting your bike race day ready?

Yes, the first thing I like to say is it's important that one month or so before the race, you don't change your position or things like that. No major changes, because it's not good to race with a different position than you were riding before. Second thing, is when you start working on your bike, changing wheels, gears, things like that, don't do it one day before the race, because if it's not working out, then you might end up in a panic and a spot of trouble as you won't have time to solve it.

Wheels - of course, wheels are important on a TT bike and triathlon bike. You might have another set for the race instead of the training wheels, so you maybe will swap them. The choice of wheels will depend on the course, the wind, how the weather conditions are looking. The guys on the team have three different kinds of wheels. They can choose between different types of rims or discs.

Tyres - There is a lot to say about tyres, but normally, if you have a second wheel set for race day, you will have also a pair of nice race tyres on it with less rolling resistance than the training tyres. There are, of course, different widths of tyres. You have the 23, 25, even sometimes 28 now, but it also depends on how the surface is where you're racing. A wider tyre also has a better the rolling resistance.

Beyond the wheels and tyres , it's important to check the brakes and gears on your race bike. Tom takes you through why it is important and Mark takes you through how to adjust each of these. Finally you want your bike to be quick, and to look good, so make sure you give it a good clean and polish before race day!

What Happened In My First Ever Triathlon

I tell you the story of my first ever triathlon in Bass Lake, CA. I had no intention of doing it but the race was so close to me that I had to give it a try.

I swam like a drowning dog, biked like Lance Armstrong, and ran like my legs were rubber. But when all is said and done I had a ton of fun doing my first ever triathlon and will do more in the future.
