China's Feng Zhe Wins Artistic Parallel Bars Gold - London 2012 Olympics

China's Feng Zhe wins the men's artistic gymnastics parallel bars gold medal in the North Greenwich Arena at the London 2012 Olympic Games (7 August).

Germany's Marcel Nguyen won the event's silver medal with France's Hamilton Sabot winning bronze.

Artistic gymnastics was introduced at the very first Olympic Games in 1896 in Athens, and has been present at every edition of the Games since then. At the beginning, it comprised disciplines that are difficult to qualify as artistic, such as climbing and acrobatics.

The foundations of the Olympic gymnastics programme were laid at the 1924 Games in Paris, when the men's apparatus individual and team competitions appeared. In 1928, women were included in the Amsterdam Games. It was not until 1952 that the women's programme was developed, with seven events, and then stabilised at six events as from the 1960 Games in Rome.

I'm going to show you guys three basic skills on the parallel bars. The parallel bars is one of six men's events and it consists of two parallel bars. The most basic skill being an L-hold. So what you do is you've got to jump on the parallel bars, hold yourself in a support and lift your legs in front of you into and L-position, an L-shaped position, so your legs will be parallel with the parallel bars.

The next skill that I'm going to show you guys to do, actually Yuri is going to do it. He's going to do what's called a forward travel, so he's going to swing forward, put his legs on the bar, reach forward and arch back and continue on to the third skill, that I'm going to show you guys how to do, which is called a support swing. So it'll just involve his legs kicking forward and backwards while holding into a support position. Those are three basic skills on the parallel bars.

(Starting Position)

- Grab the bars and support yourself above the floor with your arms straight and your torso slightly bent forward.

- Keep your chest lifted and your shoulder blades pinned back. This is the starting position.

(First Movement)

- Inhale as you lower yourself by bending your elbows until your chest feels fully stretched.

(Second Movement)

- Now, exhale as you use your pec muscles to lift yourself back to the starting position. Tightly contract your pecs at the end of the movement.

- Hold the contraction for a moment, and then repeat the movements until you have finished all of your reps.

I'm going to walk you guys through a beginner's parallel bar routine. So when you're doing any routine you need a mount, some skills in the middle, and a dismount. Yuri was a former gymnast, he's going to show us how to do a routine. And what he's going to do, he's going to do a glide kip. Then he's going to do a press handstand. Then he's going to do swings, a pirouette, some more support swings, and a back toss, which is considered a dismount.

So that is a basic parallel bar routine and we're going to watch him do it now. All right, here he is going to mount, he's going to salute to the judges, now he's swinging, that's called a glide kip, on an L-hold now, he's pressing into a handstand position, he's doing support swings now in full extensions, the handstand, a nice pirouette, that's a one bar handstand. That's extremely difficult, another pirouette and a back toss dismount. Very nice.
