Artistic gymnastics was introduced at the very first Olympic Games in 1896 in Athens, and has been present at every edition of the Games since then. At the beginning, it comprised disciplines that are difficult to qualify as artistic, such as climbing and acrobatics.

The foundations of the Olympic gymnastics programme were laid at the 1924 Games in Paris, when the men's apparatus individual and team competitions appeared. In 1928, women were included in the Amsterdam Games. It was not until 1952 that the women's programme was developed, with seven events, and then stabilised at six events as from the 1960 Games in Rome.

I'm going to show you guys three basic skills on the parallel bars. The parallel bars is one of six men's events and it consists of two parallel bars. The most basic skill being an L-hold. So what you do is you've got to jump on the parallel bars, hold yourself in a support and lift your legs in front of you into and L-position, an L-shaped position, so your legs will be parallel with the parallel bars.

The next skill that I'm going to show you guys to do, actually Yuri is going to do it. He's going to do what's called a forward travel, so he's going to swing forward, put his legs on the bar, reach forward and arch back and continue on to the third skill, that I'm going to show you guys how to do, which is called a support swing. So it'll just involve his legs kicking forward and backwards while holding into a support position. Those are three basic skills on the parallel bars.

Straight VS Parallel Bar Dips | Which is best?

The Home of Bodyweight Strength ➤

FOLLOW FITNESSFAQS:

TRAINING PROGRAMS:

This video covers both the straight bar and parallel bar dip. You will learn the straight bar dip is going to preferentially target the chest. The parallel bar dip will preferentially target the triceps. In both exercises the shoulders, pecs and triceps are all worked, however you can increase the stimulation to the aforementioned areas with changes in technique.

The straight bar dip is great preparation for the muscle up and bulgarian dip.

The dip in general is great for working the lower chest, upper chest and overall growing the size of your pecs.

A clip from Parallel Bar Fundamentals

This DVD will teach you the critical elements necessary to successfully master the support position on parallel bars.

This DVD, Parallel Bar Fundamentals, will teach you the critical elements necessary to successfully master the support position on parallel bars. You will learn how to hold the bars, rotate your arms correctly and the importance of developing strength in the shoulder area. You will see Jeff Robinson interact with the gymnasts while teaching and explaining the importance of several drills and exercises. Jeff leads two young gymnasts from LaFleur's Gymnastics Club in Tampa, Florida, through several important exercises to develop the correct static positions in support and to help young gymnasts start to swing with proper technique. He gives insight on how working with boys is different than working with girls and gives ideas to enhance the learning experience for boys in your program.
