7-Star Praying Mantis (七星螳螂) Kung-Fu Series: Beng Bu Demo (Part 1)

Watch this short, but fast performance of 7-Star Northern Style Praying Mantis Kungfu performed by Sifu Yingsheng (Wilson) Wu.

The signature form (or 'taolu') in Northern Style Praying Mantis is Beng Bu, otherwise known as Crushing Step. Although it is considered a beginner-level form and is taught early on to students, it has many of the well-recognized techniques of the mantis style. However, there may be some differences and lesser known fighting concepts and techniques found in Beng Bu that we would like to share to other practitioners and martial artists interested in this style.

For part 2 of this video series:

Master Wu, sifu based out of Richmond, BC-- specializes in 7-Star Northern Praying Mantis whose direct lineage extends back to Luo Guang Yu, and ultimately, Wang Lang.

In our Chin Woo martial arts college, we use Praying Mantis as our core system to teach Chinese MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) that combines external kung-fu (northern mantis, xia quan, hong quan, Cai Li Fo) with internal kung-fu (taichi, baguazhang, xingyi) for competitive sport such as Chinese Sanda or Leitei. Qigong and meditation is also a main component of our training.

For a full, non-cut version of Beng Bu performed by Master Yingsheng (Wilson) Wu, check out this video:

Alternate terms:
Praying Mantis = Tanglang Quan
Xia Quan = Hup Gar = Tibetan Kung-Fu

Praying Mantis Style - Instructional Wushu Form - 螳螂拳

↳ For full instructions

In co-operation with Tagou Shaolin Wushu School

This is a modern wushu praying mantis form. The praying mantis style is a traditional wushu animal style. Modern mantis style forms are designed for shows (e.g. Shaolin Shows), which means that there are more acrobatic jumps and the forms are usually shortened. Technique-by-technique praying mantis instructions will be published later. Interactive instructions can be found on flashmavi.com

7-Star Praying Mantis (七星螳螂) Kung-Fu: Tou Tao (偷桃) (Pt. 1)

Bai Yuan Tou Tao, performed by Master Yingsheng (Wilson) Wu, is a high-level taolu (form) from the 7-Star Praying Mantis kung-fu system. The translation of Tou Tao is Steals the Peach. We shot first at 2 camera angles to better see the movements, followed by 3 applications, and finally the entire form at 3/4 speed and power.

Hope you enjoy the background scenery of beautiful Vancouver, BC (and sorry for the cyclist that rode right in front of the cam).

Street Practical Combinations - Northern Praying Mantis Kung Fu

In this video, I discuss one of Grand Master Ralph Moi Shun's favorite Shaolin styles: Northern Praying Mantis.

During GM Shun's martial career, he would pick up forms from various styles. So, in addition to the arts of Hakka Unicorn Fist, Sil Lum Fut Ga, and Ng Ga Kuen, GM Ralph Shun studied Yang Taijiquan; Northern Praying Mantis; and Bak Mei Pai.

Most of his students were not aware of Ralph's appetite for studying various arts outside of his primary three.

Ralph explained that in addition to Lum Dai Yong (Sil Lum Fut Ga Grandmaster) being the head instructor, there were other prominent masters that would share their knowledge. For example, Fong Lum Kwai.

It was from these various visiting professors that Ralph picked up the various styles.

The kung fu genius of Ralph, I observed, was his ability to look at style's form and see various street practical combinations.
