2016 Olympic Test Event - Event Finals - Women's Artistic Gymnastics

Watch with me the exciting 2016 Olympic Test Event from Rio as Gold, Silver, and Bronze is awarded in Women's Artistic Gymnastics. This is coverage of the event finals - Vault, Uneven Bars, Balance Beam, and Floor Exercise.

Keep in mind that I do not have bio sheets or pronunciations of names readily available during recording. I apologize for any mistakes. And yes, I know that Oksana Chusovitina is not both a 1991 and 2003 World Vault Champion. She won in 2003, but in 1991 it was Floor Exercise. Oops.

The gymnasts that qualified and participated in the event are listed below.

Vault Finalists: DIpa Karmakar, Oksana Chusovitina, Emily Little, Courtney McGregor, Daniele Hypolito, Gabriela Janik, Argyro Afrati, Houry Gebeshian

Uneven Bar Finalists: Elisabeth Seitz, Sophie Scheder, Rebeca Andrade, Loan His, Larissa Miller, Senna Deriks, Oreane Lechenault, Laura Waem, Gabrielle Jupp

Balance Beam Finalists: Sanne Wevers, Flavia Saraiva, Lieke Wevers, Isabela Onyshko, Ana Sofia Gomez, Pauline Schaefer, Marine Brevet, Jade Barbosa

Floor Exercise Finalists: Flavia Saraiva, Larrissa Miller, Leah Griesser, Isbaela Onyshko, Pauline Schaefer, Daniele Hypolito, Ana Perez

Since its integration into the Games in 1984 in Los Angeles, rhythmic gymnastics has always been a part of the Olympic programme. In its inaugural year, it was Canada's Lori Fung who won the gold medal.

Until 1992 in Barcelona, only one individual event was on the programme. A second, team event was added to the programme in 1996 in Atlanta.

Artistic gymnastics was introduced at the very first Olympic Games in 1896 in Athens, and has been present at every edition of the Games since then. At the beginning, it comprised disciplines that are difficult to qualify as artistic, such as climbing and acrobatics.

The foundations of the Olympic gymnastics programme were laid at the 1924 Games in Paris, when the men's apparatus individual and team competitions appeared. In 1928, women were included in the Amsterdam Games. It was not until 1952 that the women's programme was developed, with seven events, and then stabilised at six events as from the 1960 Games in Rome.

Highlights women's competition

Rhythmic gymnastics is a sport in which individuals or groups of five or more manipulate one or two pieces of apparatus: rope, hoop, ball, clubs, ribbon and freehand (no apparatus). Rhythmic gymnastics is a sport that combines elements of ballet, gymnastics, dance, and apparatus manipulation. The victor is the participant who earns the most points, determined by a panel of judges, for leaps, balances, pirouettes (pivots), apparatus handling, and execution. The choreography must cover the entire floor and contain a balance of jumps, leaps, pivots, balances (a certain number is required depending on the gymnast's level) and flexibility movements. Each movement involves a high degree of athletic skill. Physical abilities needed by a rhythmic gymnast include strength, power, flexibility, agility, dexterity, endurance and hand-eye coordination.
